COVID-19: Government absorbs electricity bills for the poor; 50% for others for 3 months

    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that government will absorb full electricity bills for the less privileged while taking care of 50% for the rest of the population using the bill of March as the benchmark.

The president made this known in his 6th televised address to the nation on Ghana’s situation as far as COVID-19 is concerned and the measures being put in place to contain it.

He noted that government has decided on the further forms of mitigation for the next three months, i.e April, May, and June; it will provide free electricity for the poor of the poor. Thus persons who consume 0 to 50 kilowatts a month for this period.


”For all other consumers government will absorb 50 percent of your electricity bill using your March 2020 bill as your benchmark, ”he said.

Ghana has so far recorded six deaths in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The total positive cases of COVID-19 in Ghana has increased by 65 to 378 with six deaths.

He thus extended the current partial lockdown of Greater Accra, Kasoa, and Greater Kumasi by one more week and the extension is expected to take effect on Monday, April 13, 2020.

The president also cautioned the citizenry to observe social distancing measures and stay at home during the lockdown.
