COVID-19: Government absorbs electricity bills for the poor; 50% for others for 3 months

DERKYI         THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS     President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that government will absorb full electricity bills for the less privileged while taking care of 50% for the rest of the population using the bill of March as the benchmark. The president made this known in his 6th televised address to the nation on Ghana’s situation as far as COVID-19 is concerned and the measures being put in place to contain it. He noted that government has decided on the further forms of mitigation for the next three months, i.e April, May, and June; it will provide free electricity for the poor of the poor. Thus persons who consume 0 to 50 kilowatts a month for this period. ”For all other consumers government will absorb 50 percent of your electricity bill using your March 2020 bill as your benchmark, ”he said. DERKYI #SPREADCALMNOTFEAR     PRESIDENT ADDRESSES THE NATION TONIGHT President Akufo-Addo is expected to clear the air, discussions on whether or not there will be an extension of the partial lockdown imposed on parts of the country. The televised address which is the sixth in a series of addresses to the nation in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to provide the latest update with regards to the nation’s fight against the deadly disease. Already, some parts of Ghana including  Greater Accra, Greater Kumasi and Kasoa have been placed on a partial lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of the viral outbreak. Scheduled to take place at 10:30pm, the address is expected to give stock of the measures implemented so far, while also providing additional ones, if the need arise.

According to our sources, some experts are fronting for the shut down of Ghana as they have advised the president to do so before it is too late. These experts have argued that the increasing confirmed cases of corona virus are beginning to overwhelm them. Hence, if nothing is done about it soon, things might go out of hand. Ghana has confirmed 19 cases so far and more are expected to be confirmed in the coming days. Many have argued that if community spread of the disease takes place, Ghana will be in deep crisis.
